Space stations were constructed in the Earth's orbit

Earth's ever increasing population, and the strain it exerted on her natural resources towards the end of the 21st Century, saw humanity's hope turning to the vast expanses of space. Beginning with international space stations in the earth's orbit, the centuries that followed witnessed massive technological advancements in areas like artificial intelligence, cybernetics and space travel itself. These advancements eventually culminated in a grand vision called the Odysseus Project.

The objective of the Odysseus Project was to find a planet in a nearby system that could sustain human life. Seven diagnostic probes were launched into the icy depths of space in search of new worlds. Once discovered, the probes would dispatch robot units capable of terraforming the planet for mans arrival. While the probes searched the heavens, an explosive cocktail of frustration, intrigue and espionage was approaching its flash point on earth. Finally a signal was received from one of the probes as it mysteriously lingered in orbit around a planet in a distant star system.

The race was now on to develop the interstellar travel technology that would allow humans to travel to the newly discovered planet they had dubbed Calypso - a name chosen from an ancient Greek myth chronicling a sea nymph that had waylaid a homeward bound sailor for all of seven years before he saw freedom again.

When the first settlers finally arrived on Calypso they were met by a terrible surprise - their terraforming robots had been infected with a virus causing them to revolt against their human masters. A long and bloody war ensued, concluding in the final battle for Zychion city, where tens of thousands of colonist lives were lost as robot forces were driven from Calypso to an isolated planet in a nearby system called Akbal-Cimi; a base from where they continue to launch attacks against Calypso today.

Now the colony on Calypso grows again, with new pioneers arriving everyday from old earth. Cities have been rebuilt, communities restored and trade and commerce is full swing with all the gusto of a bustling new frontier.

The economy on Calypso has been seamlessly connected to the economy on Earth. This Real Cash Economy means that the Entropia Universe currency, the PED, has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar, where 10 PED = 1US$.

Adventuring trailblazers land on Calypso to seek their fortunes on the colonial frontier. Hunters and miners explore the vast wilderness encountering never-before-seen wildlife and strange humanoid mutants left from the war. Bands of colonist militia engage robot forces to defend the cities, hunters and miners in an exciting struggle to secure the future of this distant human outpost. Colonists have created shops, art galleries, night clubs, TV & radio stations, a wide range of free events with real prizes, societies, rescue services, beauty pageants, pilot services and much, much more.
